ABSTRACT: In Thomas Paine’s view, hereditary succession is a hindrance to the establishment of a politicsthat, respects the people. Paine criticizes hereditary succession because it is an obstacle to, freedom, justice andas well the development of the people. His thinking invites reflection on the foundations of power and the originof authority, as well as on the role and place of government in political life. He seeks to limit the power of themonarch in favor of a government, based on the reason and informed consent of citizens. However, an analyticaland critical approach shows that his vision has significant limitations, notably that of, underestimating the rolethat, government can play in protecting individual rights and freedoms. Instead of thinking about limitinggovernment, this article proposes a reformation that can minimize abuses of power and inequalities. Thus, forlegitimate and effective governance, citizen participation, and accountability are crucial elements.
