ABSTRACT: This study aimed to explore the effects of playing online games on the academic performance of selected Grade 11 students from Recodo National High School. The research utilized a descriptive-survey design with simple random sampling to select 60 out of 300 students. Data were collected using a questionnaire adapted from the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale (IGDS) translated into Filipino and underwent pilot testing for reliability and validity. The findings indicated several effects of online gaming on students’ academic activities. Results showed that students strongly agreed (mean score 3.47) that playing online games enhances their knowledge of computer and mobile phone usage. They also agreed (mean score 2.92) that gaming improves multitasking skills and decision-making strategies (mean score 2.90). Additionally, online gaming was associated with improving grades in various subjects (mean score 2.88). However, it was also noted that gaming negatively impacted productivity and efficiency in other tasks (mean score 2.75) and time management skills (mean score 2.73). The study concluded that while online gaming can have positive effects on certain academic skills, such as technology use and multitasking, it can also lead to distractions from academic responsibilities. Therefore, promoting balanced usage of technology and reminding students of the importance of prioritizing their studies are crucial.
