ABSTRACT: Code-switching, or the alternation of languages within a conversation, is a common phenomenon in multilingual communities. In the context of the Philippines, it is often used by students and teachers in academic discourse as a tool for expression and deepening understanding. This research aims to determine the perspectives of students specializing in languages at the Western Mindanao State University regarding the use of code-switching in academic discourse. The descriptive research design, specifically the “Descriptive Survey Research Design,” was used to gather data from forty (40) participants, consisting of twenty (20) students from the Bachelor of Secondary Education specializing in Filipino and twenty (20) specializing in English. The study focuses on determining the frequency of code-switching usage and the students’ perspectives on it, as well as analyzing significant differences based on their major and gender. According to the findings, code-switching is considered an important tool in facilitating communication and deepening understanding in academic discourse. The implications of code-switching on their ability to engage in modernization while maintaining their cultural identity have also been identified. The research provided important recommendations for improving teaching, particularly in multilingual contexts, and serves as a foundation for future studies in the field of language and education.
