The Economic Impacts of the Development of the Mandalika ExclusiveEconomic Zone in Central Lombok Regency

ABSTRACT:This qualitative descriptive research examines the economic impact of the development ofexclusive economic zone. It was conducted in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Mandalika, CentralLombok. Data obtained from this study showed that the exclusive economic zone offered some positive impactson its application. The participants indicated that there was an increase of income and entrepreneurship ratesinfluenced by the tourism activities. In addition, the development of EEZ provides quite large employmentopportunities for the surrounding community, even though they are not yet able to accommodate a wideraudience. Regional revenues also showed a positive growth, especially in the area of trade and hospitalitysectors. Accordingly, the facilities and human resource showed some significant improvements in order tosupport the new expansions. However, negative impacts such as the possibility of private resources ownershipsmight cause the decrease of control from the government and communities, resulting in lack of supervisionsover the resources. Improvement needs to be performed in various sectors including execution strategies andintegration of tourism components into every aspect of government and society. Besides, it is also necessary toincrease the tourism-consciousness attitude thus tourism in Central Lombok can contribute to the developmentof national tourism.
